Wata: from Boris - Surprise In-Store Solo Performance

Wata Boris

If you don’t like drone guitar, then you probably haven’t ever heard of Boris. Sure, they had that one hit that was kind of poppy. But most of their music has more depth and layering than that. We personally think that Boris is awesome. That may be due to our infatuation with their guitarist Wata. She’s the one featured in this picture, which was recently named the “coolest picture of all time” by a panel of the people responsible for this newsletter.

The first video is an in-store performance Wata did at Criminal Records in Atlanta, GA, USA. There was no announcement made prior to her performance. We wanted it to be a treat for the 6 people who happened to be shopping. Naturally we had to cheese it up a little by adding some bleeding ears and shaking shelves. But all in all, this was a LOUD 4 minutes of Orange amp tone that, at least in person, pounded faces with metaphorical fists of fury

Then we sat down with Wata for a brief interview about her Orange amps set-up. She’s a woman of few words, but it really only enhances her mysticism. She is, for lack of a better term, “totally awesome in every possible way.”

Boris was originally a four-piece band, with Nagata on drums. Nagata departed in 1996 leaving Atsuo to take over drumming duties and it has remained a three-piece since.[2]

From its formation, Boris' members have made deliberate efforts to avoid being pigeon-holed, or too strongly associated with any musical style. "Having some kind of preconceived message or theme is very boring to me," noted Atsuo, the band's drummer. "It becomes a crutch. Just say what you want to say."[3]
