Anouck André: We get right to the heart of this French Rock Fusion player

Anouck André: with Lâg Guitar

[Shreddelicious] 1 When did you start playing guitar?

I started playing guitar when I was in High School. I didn't take it too seriously at the very beginning, I was happy to play a few riffs of Deep Purple and Nirvana but I could not see myself as a professional guitarist.

Then, I started to take guitar lessons. My first teacher, Philippe Letort, really gave me the desire to learn more, he made me discover Jimi hendrix and some other rock legends and gave me the basis
of improvisation. Yes he was my first Blues scale :-)

A year later I graduated from High School and started lessons with Eric Louis, that has been a big step in my guitar evolution.  I learned a lot from him in a lot of style like Jazz, Bossa, Gypsy Jazz, Flamenco. I'm not saying that I mastered all those styles but I took the most of the information and the techniques that I could take from the lessons.

I had the big chance to have a few useful guitar lessons with Rick Graham too when he lived in France. In 2006, I was admitted into the Music Academy International, a famous European school . Looking back, I think it was the best year of my life, even If I still have some lack of sleep left over from this period!

A I had a complete year of music lessons with the best teachers and musicians we have in France players such as Christophe Godin, Kermheat, Hassan Hajdi, Sylvain Courtney, Jean Claude Rapin, Manu Livertout, Yannick Robert.

I graduated in 2007, then the true life started.

[Shreddelicious] 2 What made you decide to take guitar seriously?
I think that even my parents did not know the truth about this...

The story is quite strange because it can sounds weird but it really happened!  During my high school period, we were having a party with a few of my friends. At the end of the party we just started to jam. I started to play just 3 chords and then I knew that  had like a 'revelation', a deep feeling came over me, and I told myself that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

It's hard to explain because, it just happened like that, I don't know why it happened at this moment, may be my mind was wide open!, but it happened.

This was really a turning point for me because starting from that night, I had a real purpose in life and I was ready to do what was necessary to reach my goal.

[Shreddelicious] 4 What do you think of the use of social media for promoting your work?
I think it's quite a chance that we have in the 'new generation' to share our music on the internet. It helps a lot to make relationship, and to promote our music too.

Of course there is the dark side : people buy less albums, there is a lot of illegal download and so on. At the moment, it's not a big deal for me, If I was a famous artist, I'd probably worry a bit more to lose sales because of the internet, but from now, I see mostly the advantages I have with the Internet.

Furthermore I think that Youtube for example give the chance to be very close to people that listen to you, there is a direct link, they can comment , or rate the videos. And it gives a idea of what people expect.

[Shreddelicious] 5 If you had a chance to play with anyone who would you pick?
Not an easy question! If you don't mind I'll compose 2 bands, a band with musicians I love that come from differing countries , and a pure French band !

In the 'international' one, I'll love to play with Benny Greb on drums, Tigran Hamasyan on piano,Tal Wilkenfeld on bass, Oz Noy on guitar, and Dub Fx on vocals ( I'm not a big fan of dub music but this dude has a voice:)

In the French one: Damien Schmitt on drums, Serge André (my father) on Piano,Jacky Grandjean on Bass, Jean Marie Ecay on guitar.

[Shreddelicious] 6 Have you ever had any live show disasters?
Yes I've been into funny situations!

Two years ago I was playing for Timeless a concept that my father created where classical musicians and rock and jazz musicians play his compositions and the bank switch of my Nova system broke just two hours before the show... not to mention the fact that for the same show, the sound engineer was completely drunk and has been fired just before we started. Fortunately another engineer saved the show!

May be should I mention too that when I saw Alex Hutchings and  Laurie Monk just in front of me at Frankfurt Musikmesse, it was kinda stressful !!!

[Shreddelicious] 7 How do record your guitar videos?

It's been almost 5 years that I have been making my videos now, and I've been into differing methods.

I think that the first thing I did was get a good video camera,  the Zoom Q3 and then the zoom Q3 HD. It's a good compromise because the image is quite good and the sound too (for people who don't have a computer to record their instrument separately, it's definitely a good choice!)

Now I'm using a JVC camera that is better in terms of image quality, coupled with Logic 9 for the sound, and for the video editor, Videopad Editor (not the biggest program, but enough for basic transitions, titles etc..)

Before I got the Axe Fx II, I used a Shure SM57 in front on my amp, with a TC Electronic Konnekt 8 Sound Card, that worked very well, but I have to admit that it's easiest with the axe FX.

With my previous setup, sometimes I had to re-record stuff for example when my dog decided to eat just at the same time that I was recording, the mic captured everything!!

Now with the Axe, I can record and my dog can eat, both at the same time!!

[Shreddelicious] 8 What do you think of illegal music downloading?

I do not really support illegal downloading #,especially concerning emerging musicians. It's hours of work, it's money I've spent, and some people just don't know how hard it is to record an album.
I cannot say that I've never been downloaded music, but when I truly love an artist or a band, I systematically buy the album. Speaking of which , I'm waiting for my copy of the new Aristocrats!

It's important to support musicians if you want to see them grow and carry on !

[Shreddelicious] 9 Can you tell us a bit about your Guitars and Amps?
You're right to mention 'a bit' in the question , because I'd be able to write a book ;)

To be transparent, I'd say that my infidelity period has ended! I've been playing a lot of different guitars from a lot of different brands, but I've just entered the Lâg Guitars family and I feel like home now. I have 3 of their beautiful guitars , a Jet model that in my opinion has the qualities of a strat with a modern comfort and sound (and a very original shape)

An Imperator model ( smooth for jazz, loud for rock) and a beautiful Tramontane 400 ACE (electro Acoustic model) that I have used that for a year now and that made me fall in love with the company.  Michel Lâg is a very accessible person and it's a big joy and pride to be in such a family.

In the amp side, I allow myself to stay butterfly-minded. Just now I have a Blackstar stage 20 , really useful for little gigs or for home, and a Mesa 5:50 head with a Mesa 2x12 cab.

I sold my Mark V and I hate myself everyday about that !

I really love DV Mark amps too, I met Marco de Virgilis at Musikmesse and I had the chance to try the Multiamp head...It's a serious competitor for the Axe Fx !!

In the effects side I do not leave my Nova System (Almost 5 years that I use it, it's the only piece that hasn't changed in my rig!) and some other pedals from TC Electronic. We have a nice collaboration and I really love the products.

The other part of my rig is composed by the nice pedals from Ten Effects (formerly known as Toadworks effects). The new pedal line is outstanding and Ryan Dunn is really doing awesome work!

[Shreddelicious] 10 Can you tell us about your latest recording?

The latest interesting collaboration I've been taking part was the EP of a French Hang  player called Henri Harent. I've loved this recording because it was more than a simple work of session musician.

He gave me the full permission of doing what I wanted . The hang is a unique instrument , so it inspired me a different kind of playing.
Hang

Concerning my upcoming album, I'm seriously at work now! Ideas are more clear. I felt a little 'frozen' in the previous months because I was obsessed by my technique and I wasn't considering myself as ready enough to record something. I red a quote from l'abbée Pierre that pushed me to jump over the voices in my head : 'You don't have to wait to be perfect in order to start doing something good'.
