Rebecca Scammon: Beginner 8 String Lesson: Moving Patterns Down to the 8th String

Rebecca Scammon

Hello interwebz! It's been a hot second since I've posted. There's been a lot going on in my life that has taken me away from being public musically. I have been busy getting ready for and then moving across the country. Since I'm mostly settled in my new home now I thought I would start seriously digging into music again. I've been teaching some Skype lessons, so it seemed natural to start with a youtube lesson. Since my other teaching videos are more intermediate/advanced arpeggios, I thought this time I would do something for the beginner 8 string players out there. It is coming from the perspective that you have been playing a 6 string for a bit and recently decided to switch it up to an 8 string. In the video I go over how to move a major scale and a pentatonic scale down to the 8th string, but what I'm hoping you'll gain from the video is the overall concept of how I go about it. Knowing how to take your favorite scales and arpeggios and being able to figure out how to start them on the 8th string is a really useful tool that will give you a lot of independence with your instrument. You also get to check out my new Strandberg Guitars Boden Metal 8 in action. ;) Cheers!

The song in the intro is Demiurge by Meshuggah. This video is coming from the perspective that you have been playing a 6 string for a little bit and are switching over to an 8 string. It is intended to help you figure out how to move the patterns you already know down to the 7th and 8th strings. I hope it helps!
