Elisa Zimbardo: Before Florence

🔹 "Before Florence" is one of those songs that you start at a particular moment in your life, but then you close in a drawer, a bit like to protect it, a bit because you think it's not the right time to complete it. Until the day of my live stream for Musicoff Young # 6, the special occasion I decided to dust off that old melody and make it blossom into what was the end result. To those who ask me: "But why Before Florence?" I usually reply that there are two reasons: the first, the more obvious one, that is, that I started writing the theme and the first chords the day before a trip to Florence, a place where some affections awaited me; and then the second, the more profound one, which explains the meaning that this passage has for me: that trip to Florence had been for me the first trip away from home since the beginning of the pandemic: a period of profound bewilderment that slowly subsided and then resolved right from that departure, as if it were the first step towards ascent. Here, in this sense, the theme of "travel" takes on the meaning of "displacement as change". It is true as the philosopher Seneca said that moving away from your home with the problems inside you will not help you to leave them behind, as you will take them with you but to another place, but it is also true that a journey can be a step towards awareness and acceptance of what one is, without pretending to want to cancel it at all costs. I hope that everyone gives their own interpretation to this piece, without necessarily thinking about mine. I would be delighted to know that everyone can feel the most disparate emotions inside us, from joy to melancholy, from hope to resignation. I would like it to be a blank sheet for everyone to secretly color according to their mood. 🔹
