QWER (큐더블유이알)
South Korean Pop-Rock Phenomenon, Anime-Rock Aesthetic & Chart-Topping Quartet
Biography & Formation Overview
Formed in Seoul, South Korea, in 2023, QWER is a four-member all-female pop-rock band created through the viral web documentary project Favorite Children (최애의 아이들), produced by media agency 3Y Corporation and Tamago Production (headed by popular creator Kim Egg). Drawing their name from the foundational "Q-W-E-R" skill keys used in multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games such as League of Legends, each member corresponds to a specific key and assigned role in the band.
Bridging prominent internet and creator culture with mainstream music, the quartet brought together popular online creators, streamers, and seasoned musical performers. Debuting in October 2023 with the single album Harmony from Discord and its infectious lead track "Discord," QWER quickly exploded into a mainstream cultural phenomenon. Driven by their bright, energetic J-rock and anime-soundtrack influences, their 2024 breakout single "T.B.H" (고민중독) and subsequent chart-toppers like "My Name Is Malguem" (내 이름 맑음) swept major South Korean domestic charts (MelOn, Genie, Circle Chart) and led to major festival appearances, including the Pentaport Rock Festival and international arena tours.
Band Lineup & Instrumental Roles
- Chodan (쵸단 / Hong Da-hye) – Key: Q | Drums, Sub-Vocals & Co-Leader
- A classically trained percussionist and former major in practical music at university. Chodan anchors the band behind the kit with crisp snare drive, energetic punk-rock tempo control, and steady dynamic pocket while contributing harmony vocals.
- Magenta (마젠타 / Lee Ah-reum) – Key: W | Bass Guitar & Sub-Vocals
- A prominent streamer and social creator who took on electric bass for the project. She locks into the rhythm section with aggressive pick attack, driving 8th-note root lines, and infectious stage energy that bridges the drums with guitar counterpoint.
- Hina (히나 / Nyangnyeongnyeong / Jang Na-young) – Key: E | Lead & Rhythm Guitar, Keyboards
- A viral digital creator and cosplayer who began playing classical piano in childhood. Serving as the primary instrumental melodicist on guitar and synth textures, Hina delivers soaring J-rock-inspired lead fills, melodic hook motifs, and fast pentatonic solos.
- Siyeon (시연 / Lee Si-yeon) – Key: R | Main Vocals & Rhythm Guitar
- A veteran stage performer and former member of Japanese idol powerhouse NMB48. As the vocal centerpiece and ultimate skill ("R"), Siyeon delivers powerhouse belts, pristine high-register pitch, emotional breath control, and driving rhythm guitar support.
