Extreme Metal Meets Idol Pop: The Unstoppable Rise of Broken By The Scream

Published on October 24, 2026 | Metalcore & Extreme Idol Spotlight

If you thought you knew what Japanese metal and idol culture could accomplish when fused together, think again. Broken By The Scream (often abbreviated as BBTS) has captured global attention by blending ultra-catchy, vibrant pop vocal melodies with the sheer, unbridled brutality of death metal, metalcore, and extreme technical musicianship.

Artist Biography

Formed in Tokyo in 2016 by guitarist, producer, and composer Katsuya Kumamoto (alias Electro Sonar), Broken By The Scream set out on a bold and unconventional gamble: to merge the aesthetic and clean choruses of J-pop idols with crushing, aggressive extreme metal.

Driven by a distinctive four-vocalist dynamic featuring contrasting clean tones and ferocious growls/screams, the group quickly built a cult following before expanding their reach internationally. Known for high-octane stage energy and technical arrangements ranging from thrash to djent and black metal, BBTS has evolved into a premier force on the global modern metal scene.
