Maleny Morfen: Shreddelicious catches with Maleny to talk all things guitar

Maleny Morfen
[Shreddelicious] When did you start playing guitar?

[Maleny Morfen]
I first started on the keyboards when I was about 5 or 6 years old, I had a little Casio. Then I asked for an acoustic guitar for my 9th birthday present, but it was until I was 12 that I took some classical guitar lessons.

I was also listening to Ottmart Liebert and Paco de Lucía at that time. It was some years later that I started listening to jazz and instrumental rock.

[Shreddelicious] What made you decide to take guitar seriously?

[Maleny Morfen]
I've always loved music, it was the only way I could really express myself.

That’s why I started making my own tunes.

I think the moment when I decided to take up the guitar seriously was after listening to some local jazz band.

[Shreddelicious] What are your favourite albums?

[Maleny Morfen]
There are many great albums. Some of my favorites are:

[Shreddelicious] What do you think of the use of social media for promoting your work?

[Maleny Morfen]
It’s a hard time for musicians; the music industry has changed. Now is harder to make some money selling your music because so many people download your tunes for free. If you want to make a record (as an independent artist) you have to pay for it, with your own money.

On the other hand, the social media is the only way some of us have the chance to expose our music around the world, so in a personal way, I love this opportunity to show and share my music.

I think the music business is going to change at some point, meanwhile we have to keep doing what we love and find a way to make this industry better for the musicians.

[Shreddelicious] If you had a chance to play with anyone who would you pick?

[Maleny Morfen]
This is a hard question. There are so many musicians I admire and would love to play with, like

  • Carlos Santana,
  • Joe Satriani,
  • Larry Carlton,
  • Dennis Chambers,
  • Victor Wooten,
  • Def Leppard,
  • Steve Lukather,
  • David Garrett.

[Shreddelicious] Have you ever had any live show disasters?

[Maleny Morfen]
Yeah… when I was younger I was playing in some local places some pop songs that I had composed. One time, I went up the stage and just forgot my own lyrics… That was awful.

Just a free improvisation

[Shreddelicious] How do record your guitar videos?

[Maleny Morfen]
I have a small video camera, it doesn't record high quality video or audio, but is the easiest and fastest way to record something and share it.

[Shreddelicious] What do you think of illegal music downloading?

[Maleny Morfen]
It would be nice that people pay for downloading those files…

[Shreddelicious] Can you tell us a bit about your Guitars and Amps?

[Maleny Morfen]
I had different guitars until I found the one I liked the most. Is a Music Man, John Petrucci model. It has a very warm and clean sound.

I also have a Stratocaster Fender and an Ibanez Prestige, but I always play my Music Man.

I also tried so many different effects (analog and digital) and ended up having just a few. I use a Tube Screamer ’87, an EP Booster and a BB Preamp.

Sometimes I use the distortion and reverb of the amp, I have a Fender Blues Jr.

[Shreddelicious] Can you tell us about your latest recording?

Maleny Morfen: Aire
[Maleny Morfen]
I have just released my first solo EP “Aire” (Air).

It has 5 songs, all composed by myself.

I co-produced the EP with Rubén Olvera who also was the audio engineer and bass player in the recording.

Carlos Moguel played the drums. I played all the guitars.
Pablo Acuña did the master. Aaron Tapia and Ricardo Sánchez took the pics. Eduardo Moctezuma did the art of the EP, is a drawing made with pencil and tint.

I really enjoyed making this record, had a lot of fun and support from my friends who participated in this project, from the pre-production to the pics and art of the EP.
